Vashon Island Kayaks will open again this year For a while it looked like Vashon Island Kayaks was closing for good. David Steel and Doug Baum had decided to retire, but couldn't find anyone able to take over the business. After all, it's not really a huge cash machine while running it takes a huge investment in time and effort. Most of the business is done in the summer months, but the bills have to get paid all year round. There is a lot of inventory to take care of - washing kayaks and wet gear, keeping up with paddles and spray skirts and making sure that everything is in serviceable condition when it leaves as well as when it comes back at the end of a long, sunburnt day.
A few prospective buyers looked at the business, but just weren't able to make it happen for one reason or another. The rowing club wanted the space, and it looked like the last dance for the kayaks was last year. Then, when all seemed finally lost forever, a private donor gave the Parks District enough seed money so that they could operate the business themselves. So this year on Memorial Day weekend Vashon Island Kayaks will reopen for business in its former location at the Jensen Point Boathouse.
